John Jal Deng is training in theology at George Whitefield College in Cape Town. He plans to return to South Sudan to be a pastor when he finishes in November. According to John, preaching the light of the gospel in South Sudan will bring considerable change to a country ravaged by conflict and the suffering that accompanies it. At AID, we agree with John which is why we are supporting him in his studies in partnership with CORE Training and Development.
Last week, John was faced with challenging visa issues and there was a possibility that he may not be able to finish his studies. However, we were pleased to hear that this is now resolved so thank you to anyone who was praying for that situation. Recently, we received an update of how John is progressing at George Whitefield.
John has enjoyed the academic aspect of his course enormously – this semester he has studied the book of Psalms in Hebrew and English and has benefited from interaction with different scholars during his many modules. One challenge though that John mentions is that all this requires some considerable time management skills! Please pray for him as he works hard to complete his studies.
John has found the pastoral care element of the course to be particularly relevant for his future ministry:
‘We have been taught how to counsel people. This module is very important to my context of South Sudan because I come from a war-torn area…There is a need to give people hope using biblical counselling.’
John’s hopes for when he concludes his time in Cape Town are to return to South Sudan, preach the gospel and also to return to Bishop Gwynne College as a faculty member and teach others what he has learnt while in South Africa. It is great that he has this two-fold vision because not only will he share the good news of Jesus with those around him but he will also equip fellow South Sudanese believers to do the same.
Please pray for John as he returns, for safety, that he would settle well and would have opportunities to achieve these exciting aims. Please pray too for the future of AID’s involvement with CORE as we hope to support other students in a similar way.
