The ward has been under construction for the last 4 months due to an increasing demand for beds; the former children’s ward had only 11 beds but there would often be around 20 patients needing its services at any one time. Staff had to use additional mattresses to meet this demand. The new ward provides an extra 20 beds for children and so also allows room for growth.
”The staff love the new ward and the community are also very pleased as the children will not need to have mattresses on the floor or the veranda,” said Poppy Spens, a Nurse Practitioner from Winchester who has worked with the clinic since 2006 and who attended the opening ceremony.
The Martha Clinic is based in the south of South Sudan and provides excellent healthcare to a large number of patients. It sees around 4,000 patients per month – more than the local government-run hospital.
“The community are very excited as most people prefer to use Martha for sick children,” said Poppy.
The ward has already been well-used, with 7 patients being admitted the day after the opening ceremony.
We give thanks to God for providing the finances and team to enable this to happen and pray that the clinic will continue to provide and excellent service to the community of Yei for many years to come.
