”It’s been a long time since we received training like this!”
The Episcopal Church of the Sudan’s Rev Malis Basha, Mission & Evangelism Co-ordinator for the Diocese of Juba (who is supported by AID) has been busy running training conferences for pastors in Juba this month. A total of 64 pastors have attended the conferences which gave practical guidance & training on how to preach from the Bible.
During the civil war in South Sudan, training and teaching were neglected in all areas of life. So whilst the Episcopal Church of the Sudan (ECS) has around 200 parishes in Juba alone, most pastors have had little or no training. Even as political violence continues, AID believes that it is crucial for the ECS to train its Church leaders in preaching, communication, leadership and discipleship so that churches in local communities are not only numerically strong but also grow in faith rooted in the Bible, lived out in obedience to God and able to stand firm in suffering. AID is supporting the ECS’s work in strengthening churches.
Training was given by Rev Malis and another local pastor. Over the course of five days, attendees were taught how to analyse a Bible passage within its context, grasp its subject and theme, how to write a sermon and how to apply the Bible to their lives and the lives of their congregations. All who attended have been deeply grateful for the training saying they had not had such good training in a very long time, if ever.
We too are thankful for the first training conferences and look forward to many more in the coming months. Our prayer is that this ministry will produce the fruit of a mature and faithful community of believers who will serve Christ in South Sudan. Please join with us in praying that the training will be useful, well understood and applied. Please pray also for Malis as he delivers a lot of the training and co-ordinates conferences.
